RECOMMENDATIONS
The aim of these recommendations is to help and advise visitors
Issues that need your attention
-
Attitude recommendations
Search for knowledge about the Sámi community that you are visiting
Reflect on your behaviour as you are not visiting an uninhabited territory
Acknowledge that you are visiting Sámi land
Show respect to the Sámi People and to Sámi land.
-
Practical recommendations
Do not leave litter, take it to designated places
Sámi cabins are not abandoned, do not take firewood from the cabins
If you see reindeer, do not frighten them, and avoid that by going around them
As a visitor to our home, we want you to reflect on these questions and respect our statements
-
Acknowledge our rights and respect our land use, our way of life and our culture.
Still, our people and our way of life is not recognized, and we are not always consulted when decisions that affect our lives are taken by the authorities. The establishment of new tourist trails, new tourist activities and tourism development take place without Sámi involvement even though it would be easy for the tourist businesses to include the Sámi communities in their planning. This does not demand much effort, but it would benefit both the Sámi people and the tourist business.
-
You represent your people, and we see your people through your behaviour. Make your people proud.
Our reindeer herding- fishing- and hunting businesses are sustainable, and have been established in these areas long before the tourism and mining industries were established here. These actors did not ask where to establish their businesses and they did not ask for permission to use our land. We expect that you do not make the same mistake, that you rather search for knowledge about us and talk with us.
-
Are you allowed to be here?
Visit https://www.sametinget.se/underlag and find out which Sámi community land you intend to visit. Contact the Sámi community and they will let you know where you can travel and camp without disturbing anyone. They will also inform you about local regulations and restricted areas.

We expect that you seek information and knowledge about us.
Reindeer herding families together create a way of life that is built on practical issues and cultural traditions connected to the reindeer´s use of seasonal grazing lands, with an annual migration between these lands. Reindeer herders know and accept the cultural traditions and duties connected to reindeer herding, and they have the knowledge to understand the reindeer in its landscape. To be a part of the reindeer herding community one must follow the reindeer migrations and adapt one’s life to their seasonal grazing.
